People Share Their Parents’ Toxic Behaviors Online

By: Kate Row | Last updated: Apr 20, 2023

Parenting might be the hardest job in the world, not everyone is born to be one! Thankfully, people like to share their experiences online and some of these toxic parents might really shock you. We hope you can’t relate to any of these stories of bad parents.

Everyone has their own way of parenting, but some things are just plain wrong! We shouldn’t have to say this but do not tattoo your five year old. From unbelievably strict rules and regulations to controlling attitudes, these are some stories about awfully toxic parents.

Thanks A lot, Mom.

This woman is giving a new name to “evil stepmother”. Apparently the family got together for a family outing and some members ended up getting coronavirus. When they checked in with stepmom to make sure she wasn’t sick as well they were in for a nasty treat.

Reddit

She had contracted the virus the week before and didn’t tell anyone, let alone the people that she was spending time with! This is no way to treat your family members. We hope they all made a speedy recovery.

It’s All Your Fault!

Some toxic moms have a special way of making everything your fault. You’re sick? It’s because you spend too much time on that phone. A worldwide lockdown happens because of a virus? That’s your fault too!

Reddit

It’s comical that this mom would think that her son could be the reason that the entire pandemic happened. They just go out way too often! I guess they learned to stay home more often.

A Little Bit of an Over Exaggeration

Parents can be a little overprotective at times. You are their child after all. But this mom took it a little too far when she called the cops on her own daughter. This is what happens when we jump to conclusions.

Reddit

She probably should have done a quick check of the house before she decided that her daughter snuck out of the house. That was probably an embarrassing one to explain to the cops. “Sorry officer, I was just eating a snack”.

Youtuber Parents

A new breed of toxic parents has come in the form of “youtubers”. Family channels have popped up all over the place and people are making money off of recording their home lives. But the kids don’t have a say in any of this!

Reddit

What if they don’t want their report card shared across the internet? We hope Oliver got straight ‘A’s or else he might be embarrassed when more than 3,000 people see his bad grades. Exploiting your children for views and money is not cool!

Unrealistic Standards

In this case, the parent is really setting up their kid for failure. It’s not like he’s even trying to get out of doing the dishes. But he can’t get them all done the minute he steps through the door! Also, having cameras in the house to make sure they did their chores is very odd.

Reddit

A day of no tech just for not getting the dishes done in time is a bit extreme. Thankfully, he was able to post this text exchange on the internet for us all to enjoy before he had his phone taken away.

Bad Moms Club

If you have to explain your behaviors by starting with “In my defense” it’s probably not something you should be doing. This toxic mom sent her kid to school with COVID because she just couldn’t miss her hair appointment.

Reddit

We see where the priorities lie. And we certainly can’t forget about those important lunch plans. Having to cancel at the last minute sucks. Hair and lunch appointments come before health, right?

Shut the Toilet Seat… Or Else

Every mom who has raised sons has probably had to deal with the toilet seat being left up and we can understand wanting them to break that habit. But, this is something of an overreaction in our opinion.

Reddit

Has she ever heard of asking nicely? No more computer time for them! Also, she jumps to the conclusion that he is on drugs just because his grades are down and the toilet seat is up. Chill out, lady!

Not the Favorite Child

Parents aren’t supposed to have favorites, but we know that they do sometimes harbor special feelings for one sibling. And, this might even change day by day, but this is such a  blatant show of favoritism that it’s absolutely toxic.

Reddit

When mom and sister join forces, you can feel super boxed out! We can’t believe she pretended like she didn’t know who hit the car and wished her well on her journey to figure it out when she knew it was her sister all along. We obviously know who’s the favorite.

This Love is Conditional

Having kids is supposed to mean that you love them unconditionally, no matter what. That means you love them no matter who they decide to date, what they enjoy doing, and how they change over time. But not every parent gets that memo.

Reddit

This mom didn’t approve of the person her child was dating so she decided to stop paying for their education! Why would that be the punishment? Don’t you want your child to be educated?

When Mom Joins the Whatsapp Cult

The internet is a place where anyone can find a community. This might sound like  a positive, but it can be taken way too far sometimes especially when the members of a group are very easily swayed.

Reddit

I guess this mom joined an online group that advised her to put onions in the corners of her home to prevent illness in the house. This might be a little kooky but it’s also pretty harmless. That house probably doesn’t smell very good, though.

What About the Oils?

When your 16 year old son is giving you grief, turn to oils! Right? It looks like this mom discovered essential oils and is manically trying to get them close to her son in any way possible.

Reddit

She’s sneaking it in his food (creepy). She’s rubbing it in his room and on his personal items (very weird). We don’t know how she thinks the oils are going to change her son, but we’re a little worried for him to be honest!

Blanket Privileges Revoked

If you are going to provoke your mom, just know you’re playing with fire. A toxic parent will retaliate in ways you can’t even imagine. And this is one perfect example. He questioned her role in the house.

Reddit

So she stole his blankets. We bet those were a long and cold 5 months for the kid. I guess she answered his question. Her use in the family is revoking privileges. Don’t ask questions you don’t want answered, I guess.

Taking it Too Far

Now this is just taking things way too far. Lots of young kids like to spend their time playing video games. And we understand that parents have to limit the amount of screen-time the kids spend doing this, but this takes it way too far.

This parent went ahead and smashed their kid’s game console repeatedly with a hammer! At least they know they’re crazy, but I think we can all agree that this is a huge overreaction.

Find Her Snake!

This poor girl needs to find her beloved snake. Getting rid of your child’s pet because they pissed you off is pretty darn cruel and is definitely no way to maintain a healthy relationship with your kid.

Reddit

We sure hope that this girl was able to find her snake and get it back in her possession. Not only did she get rid of the snake but she sold it to someone and made a profit! Totally uncalled for.

Selling Everything Until There’s Nothing Left

This might be one of the most extreme reactions to a kid not putting their clothes away that we have ever seen. There is a fine line between discipline and absolute mayhem! This reaction certainly falls in the toxic category.

Reddit

I think this goes way beyond tough love and into something else entirely. They are trying to teach him a lesson by selling all of his stuff, including his bed frame! We don’t know how old their son is but we guess that he will be moving out shortly after this incident.

The Dreaded Missed Call

If you’re doing something  you know you’re not supposed to be doing you dread seeing those missed messages and calls from your mom or dad. But if you haven’t done anything wrong, and you’re getting calls every minute, it’s just plain freaky!

Reddit

Hounding your kid for money is really bizarre and there is no way to have a good relationship with them. We wonder if he eventually blocked her number because this is taking things to a crazy level.

A Tattoo for a 5 Year Old?

Okay, everyone parents differently and what we can probably all agree on is that parents don’t often like to be told how to parent their own children. That’s fair enough until we have a situation as outlandish as this one.

Reddit

This woman took to the internet to see if anyone could recommend a tattoo artist… for her five year old son! Who does that?! We just have to hope that she eventually decided against this insane decision and didn’t ink her poor kid.

Kids Not Behaving? Dump Them on an Island.

This situation was so wild that it actually ended up being a story on the news. These parents were fed up with their rebellious teen daughter’s attitude, so what did they decide to do?

Reddit

They dropped her off on a deserted island to fend for herself and think about her actions. They hoped that this would help her grow up. That is one of the craziest ways to try to discipline a child that we’ve ever seen.

Scaring Your Kids? Not Cool.

Parents are supposed to protect you from scary monsters, not make you scared of them! This mom obviously does not understand this. She finds joy in scaring her kid by telling her the monsters are coming for her.

Reddit

Who does that? The poor thing is only 4 year old so of course she is terrified when her mom does something like this.

How’d She Even Do That?

Strict parents have some weird ways of taking away liberties from their kids. This mom obviously abides by the fact that her children don’t deserve privacy because they’re living under her roof.

Reddit

We don’t even know how she was able to destroy this phone to the point where you can almost not tell what she is even holding. All of this just because her kid didn’t give her the password to the phone? What ever happened to a simple grounding?

Have a Bad Christmas

Money and family can get super complicated. There’s no secret about that. But when your dad is toxic, money is an even more difficult thing to discuss. I guess this dad felt entitled to some money from his son.

Reddit

And when the son refused to hand it over, he wished him a bad Christmas. How rude! This is a great way to make sure you don’t get invited over for the Holidays anymore. Your son is not an ATM.

Bad Advice

We hope there aren’t too many parents out there that feel this way. Diving parents to tell their kids NOT to follow their hearts and dreams is a pretty dangerous narrative. Kids should dream and hope and think about what they want to be when they grow up!

Reddit

But this parent believes that following their heart and encouraging them to be happy is not the right path. We can only hope their kids found what makes them happy despite them!

Reading is Bad for You

Most parents can agree that they want their children to be educated, right? Wrong. This parent actually does not want their child to learn how to read. This is one that we definitely have not seen before!

Reddit

Usually, parents are worried that their kids are spending too much time on their phones or watching T.V. But this parent is concerned that their kid is educating themselves! What a world we live in.

Move Back Home Now!

Most parents are fighting to get their kids out of the house, not keep them in it! But this mother was none too happy to find her son was living with his girlfriend. This might make sense if the kid was 16 years old but he was a grown man at this point!

Source: Twitter

Some parents just can’t seem to let go. We sure hope this crazed parent didn’t involve the police in this silly matter. This is taking empty-nesting to the absolute extreme!

Yikes

All we can really think to say in response to this one is “yikes”. It’s one thing to be a toxic parent and it’s a whole other thing to be proud of your toxicity and post it all over the internet for everyone to see.

Reddit

If you’re screaming so loudly at your kids that the neighbors can hear you, we feel pretty concerned. And referring to yourself as a psychopath lets us know that you know it’s wrong and you just don’t care.

Not Every Parent Should Homeschool

Choosing to homeschool your child is a personal choice, but boasting about not giving them proper education is definitely a cause for concern. One mom says that her daughter doesn’t know how to do multiplication.

Reddit

Another one claims that their son doesn’t even know the alphabet. These poor kids are in for a treat when they enter the real world and don’t have the skills they need!

Organic Moms

This group is called “Organic Mamas in a Toxic World” but it should probably be called “Toxic Mamas in a Toxic World”. She’s teaching her young daughter about all these harmful chemicals in the world. Kids shouldn’t have to worry about that stuff!

Reddit

Now her young daughter is refusing to eat McDonalds because she is scared of the chemicals in it. Yes, it’s bad for you, but that shouldn’t be something she’s worried about. And now the hand soap has chemicals? Yikes.

Have You Tried Not Screaming at the Baby?

We hope this was someone’s bad attempt at a joke because it certainly didn’t land with us. If you’re losing your voice from screaming at anyone, let alone a toddler, you should really reevaluate.

Reddit

It’s interesting that they’re taking to the internet looking for advice on how to get their voice back instead of seeking advice for better parenting. Maybe try not screaming at the 2 year old?

How Dare You Educate My Son?

Speaking more than one language is a huge asset! And kids can pick up languages more easily than adults so it’s a really good time for them to learn when they’re young. This parent certainly does not agree with this, however.

They were so upset that their son was taught some Spanish words that they called it “surprisingly inappropriate”. Even teachers have to deal with toxic parents.

Offering Up Your Kids for Free Labor

Teaching your kids that work ethic is important is one thing. Not everything comes easy in life. But offering them up for free labor is crazy! This person was happy to pay someone to help them out with weeding their garden.

Reddit

But this parent insisted that their daughter help without being paid. We’re sure glad that the person seeking help did not allow that to happen and pointed out how absurd it would be. She can learn about hard work while getting paid to do it.

Punishing your Child for Finding out the Tooth Fairy Isn’t Real is Crazy

That time comes in your child’s life where they find out the tooth fairy isn’t real. Nor is Santa or the Easter Bunny. But a parent had a very interesting response to someone sharing their experience with their kid discovering the Tooth Fairy wasn’t real.

Reddit

A parent shared that their 9 year old did an experiment to reveal that the Tooth Fairy was, in fact, their parents. While most people would agree that this is a sweet story, another parent commented saying that they would punish their kid for doing that. What?!

Don’t Touch Dad’s Bunker Stuff

Most parents have rules about touching their stuff or at least rules about asking before their kids go fishing around in the rooms and drawers. But this dad wants to make sure his kids don’t go touching his bunker items.

Reddit

And he’s awfully serious about it too! What did they take from the bunker room that caused such a serious reaction? It was an umbrella. I guess he’ll be the one laughing if they ever actually have to use the bunker.

You’re Grounded

This kid was annoyed that his parents went out for dinner without him when they were supposed to go all together. Fair enough right? So, when he got an invitation to go to dinner with a friend he didn’t think it would be a big deal.

Reddit

But unless he is able to finish his dinner in literally 20 mins then he’s not going according to his mom. And the pushback got him grounded! So, no dinner and he gets punished for no reason.

Some Strange Advice

Here we have two pretty strange parents interacting on the internet. The first one is seeking advice for how to get the family dog to not growl at the toddler when the toddler hits it. But that’s a totally normal reaction! Rather, she needs to figure out how to prevent the toddler from hitting the dog.

Reddit

Then, the parent that comes with advice is some of the strangest we’ve ever heard. She recommends just getting rid of the kid all together! She says they should just drop it off at the hospital where they got it. I don’t think there are return policies on children!

Don’t Delete the Minecraft

One way to start a war with your son is to delete his Minecraft world. If he’s spent that much time invested in the videogame he is going to be none too pleased if you delete it. One commenter even said that they think he won’t ever speak to her again.

Reddit

And why did she delta the world in the first place? Well, the kid ate her cookies. This seems like a situation where the punishment does not at all fit the crime!

A Slap In The Face

Getting a Ph.D. is one of the most challenging things a person can accomplish. So, imagine a parent telling you that you don’t deserve to receive it. That’s incredibly hurtful and we would understand if they wouldn’t want to speak to that parent for a long time (or maybe never again).

Source: Twitter

What this person’s father told them is unforgivable and just plain awful. The fact that she did end up quitting a few months after that comment – granted, she was already considering it anyways – shows how impacted she felt. We all know if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it all. Clearly, her father didn’t get that message!

Toxic And Insensitive

Everybody has experienced what it’s like to have a bad cold or flu; you feel weak, tired, and horrible. The last thing you would want to do is the dishes, let alone vacuum and clean the house.

Source: Reddit

When you’re expected to do that while you’re feeling under the weather, it’s really inconsiderate and insensitive. The mother in this scenario has no sympathy and cares more about the uncle than their own child (who is actually sick!) Undoubtedly, that’s toxic behavior.

One Rude Mom

In a household, fulfilling duties and responsibilities is important. And, when it comes to taking care of pets, they need care and attention, too.

Source: Reddit

This person’s mother could care less what happens to her animals, tasking her child to come over to feed them or she will get rid of the poor pets. It’s simple: if you can’t give pets the essentials that they need, then don’t have any! The mother was acting very selfishly and had no empathy for her child or the animals involved. Rude.

Pushing The Boundaries

During the pandemic, most people were just trying to be safe and cautious enough to not catch or spread the virus. Parents especially should understand if their child doesn’t feel comfortable with letting them into their apartment if they’re not vaccinated.

Source: Reddit

When the parents keep pushing their agenda and are not respectful of their child’s boundaries, it’s irritating and ignorant. What makes it worse is that they kept guilt-tripping them! They obviously didn’t get the message and didn’t consider their child’s feelings (or personal space).

Dealing With An Abusive Parent

Not every parent and child gets along well and, sometimes, parents have a history of being abusive. This person’s child was trying to give their mother another chance, but also protect themselves and their boundaries.

Source: Reddit

The mother could not even respect that her child’s home was a safe space and inviting her inside would compromise that safety. Clearly, that wasn’t good enough for the mom and she decided to push back in a passive-aggressive manner. How infuriating!

Can You Say Selfish?

When your child is going through a transition, it may be difficult to cope with, but that doesn’t warrant selfishness on your part. Regardless of who they want to be or what gender they identify with, they should feel supported and loved.

Source: Reddit

Sadly, this person’s father can’t get past their child’s decision and is only thinking about himself. We can’t imagine how frustrating and upsetting it would be to have a parent who acts this way and doesn’t even try to understand.

No Means No

Some parents don’t know when to stop pushing. Take, for example, this parent who kept hassling their child for information about a rather private matter. Even after they told them “no” repeatedly, it didn’t do a thing.

Source: Reddit

Seriously, let it go! It’s none of their business. Why are parents so nosy? Your child’s friend was dealing with a mental breakdown and all they cared about was which friend was going through it.

Struggling With An Incompetent Parent

Parents are not always the most cooperative people. Here, we have another case of animals being neglected and the child has to be responsible for their care. What is with that?!

Source: Reddit

They needed the landlord’s number so they can assure that their parent’s dog is still alive. The only thing the parent was concerned about was everything except the pet’s wellbeing. Also, calling them an “evil person”? They were only trying to help out and that’s what they got in return.

The Cutting Board Dilemma

Ok, this text exchange is kind of funny because the mother was so concerned about where her cutting board went. She thought her child hid it, but she was just looking for somebody to blame.

Source: Reddit

The most ridiculous part of the entire thing is that she “threatened” to take something of her child’s to get back at them. That is seriously childish and silly! Don’t they have anything better to be doing? At this point, we aren’t surprised at the way parents act.

Drunk Parents Are The Worst Parents

Parents sometimes act less parent-like and more like needy children. This person’s mother is incapable of taking care of herself and being responsible for her actions, so she turns to her child to step in.

Source: Reddit

It’s also evident that this person’s parent cannot even stand on her own two feet without being reliant on other people. Wrecking a car is behavior that is not ok and should not be repeated. It sounds like they need professional help and that shouldn’t come from their child!

Common Courtesy

There are moments when parents can definitely overreact towards their children, but it goes too far at times. This person’s mother got upset that she didn’t hear them say goodbye to her husband, although they actually did.

Source: Reddit

She didn’t hear them respond and made a huge deal about it. It’s almost as if she was looking for an excuse to berate and place blame on her child (and threaten to take away their car for one week if they did it again).

Emancipation Woes

A person should be able to make their own decisions, and hopefully, their parents would support them. After all, shouldn’t they want what’s best for them?

Source: Reddit

Well, when it comes to emancipation, this person’s mother was seemingly not on board. Clearly, the home situation was not healthy and they want to leave. If a parent’s child wants to be free from their grip, then they should let them go. Sometimes, they know what’s better for them than their parents.

A Blocking Is In Their Future

When your child asks you to stop contacting them, it’s uncool to push that boundary. They must have had a valid reason for blocking their biological father, enough to not want any contact from them.

Source: Reddit

The fact that the father says “grandpa would be disappointed” shows his manipulative side. Did he think that would change his son’s mind? Seems quite delusional and immature. And, Tristen refers to his biological father as Marc which clearly means they are not close.

Parental Nightmare

Children should not act as slaves to their parents and they shouldn’t be forced to cook for them, either. Fining your child $100 because they didn’t cook dinner for you every week? That’s beyond abusive.

Source: Reddit

On top of that, they already work more than full-time and go to school. So, the last thing they would want to do is make dinner for their mother when they get home. It’s truly ridiculous and not acceptable. How could a parent think this kind of dictatorial behavior is alright? It’s not.

Another Immature Parent

When a child stops responding to their parents’ messages, there’s likely a deeper reason behind it. It seems that this parent has no idea what they did wrong.

Source: Reddit

There comes a time when they need to just accept the fact that their child doesn’t want anything to do with them. Things probably could have been different, but this is how it turned out and it’s time to give them space and grace. Being immature and selfish doesn’t look good and only does more harm.

Misery Definitely Loves Company

Wow, this person’s mother truly needs a wake-up call! Their child’s response is reasonable and they have the right to feel a certain way. The “Misery definitely loves company” dig was totally uncalled for, too.

Source: Reddit

Their dad (who had just been diagnosed with progressive dementia/aphasia) was having their birthday that weekend and the mom is upset, canceling their plans. Naturally, that’s really upsetting and the person has the right to feel angry. Here we are again with a childish parent who has no regard for anybody else’s feelings!
