Anencephaly

Anencephaly is the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull, and scalp that occurs during embryonic development. However, it is widely accepted fact that children born with this disorder only lack the largest part of the brain consisting mainly of the cerebral hemispheres.

As a result, the brain will appear as a hemorrhagic mass of tissue fibers. The cerebral cortex, the portion of the brain responsible for higher order functions in humans (such as movement, thought, speech, etc), will not be present, or functional. The brainstem and cerebellum however, may be spared.

The Black Spot Phenomenon

This adorable guy has the black spot phenomenon on his face. The black spot phenomenon happens in golden and yellow Labrador Retrievers  when a dog experiences a mutation in their genetic make-up.

It’s not necessarily a birthmark, it’s just a somatic mutation. Because this is a mutation in the somatic cells, it is not passed on from generation to generation. Breeding a dog with these spots to another dog will not produce puppies with this phenomenon.
